another scene

正月に札幌へ帰り、生まれ育った町を歩いた。
ガキの頃に自転車で走り回り、雪をこいで歩いた町。
当時のままの建物も多いが、新しく建て直された家や商店も多い。
それでも僕の目にはしっかりとその頃の姿が刻まれている。
雪玉を競ってぶつけた郵便ポストまでが愛おしい。

石巻に生まれ育ったひとに震災後の石巻を案内してもらう。
僕は震災後の石巻しか知らない。
だが、間違いなく彼の目には、僕の目には映らない町の姿が
見えているのだろうと思う。
そんな町が、そこにあった建物のひとつひとつが、
息絶える姿と交錯して目の前に表れているのだろうと思った。

その現実を乗り越えることが、復興の一歩なのだとしたら、
まだ多くのひとがその端緒にもないのだと思う。
彼の背中が、かすかに歪んで見えた。

by your side to the limit

「あそこが限界ですからね」

仙台から国道6号線を南下して、原発20km地点に行く。
花粉しか防げそうもないマスクを付けた若い警官が検問に立っていた。
「この先で暮らす人は？」
「誰もいません。入ることはできませんから」

国道の検問脇に花とお茶が供えられている。
事故だろうか。それともここに津波被災者のご遺体でもあったのだろうか。
疑問を抱えつつすぐ横にあるドライブインで遅い昼飯を食べた。
食後に店主からひとしきり話を伺う。被災地の今が知りたくて歩いている。
話が終わり、礼をしてから聞いてみた。
「あの花は、事故か何かですか」

「いやぁ、違う。この先で10体ほどまとまってご遺体が見つかってね。
　捜索が入れないから、作業員がたまたま作業中に見つけたんだ。
　その遺族だろうね。あそこが一番近い場所なんだ」

unhurt

3.11からずっと気になっていた場所がある。
この写真を見て気づいたひともいるかもしれない。
松島の牡蠣剥き場。
この窓の向こうは海だ。

意を決してそこへ向かった。
無事だったんだ。
宮城沿岸部は壊滅的に津波の被害を受けたが、
松島海岸は奇跡的にかなりの軽い影響だった。

牡蠣剥き職人はその日は既に居なかったが、
牡蠣を1kg買ってきた。
帰宅するなり半分平らげてしまった。

burned to the ground

今日は写真展を觀に福島県いわき市へ。
帰りに寄ったいわき市の久之浜。ここも津波に襲われ、町が燃えた。
初めての被災地に出会うと「ここもなのか」と気力を失いそうになる。
そして何もできない。

せめてここは何があったのか、どんなひとがどんな風に暮らしていたのかと、
思いを巡らせ、それを撮る。
それは誰にも何にも酬うものにならないし、救いもしない。
あまりに落ち込み、憔悴する。

ここはカラーでは撮れなかった。すぐにカメラのモードを切り替えた。
デジタルじゃなかったらと思うと気が遠くなるほど。

the typhoon pass

「悔しいねぇ」
「悔しいも何も、せっかく入れた機械まで水浸しだ。見てくれよ」

9月の台風が過ぎた日だった。
道路脇の排水口からこんこんと海水がわきあがってくる。
潮位が上がるだけで、水に浸かってしまう状態がそこここで起こる。

電気が来ないうちからコンテナハウスを借り、
剥き出しの基礎の上に店を出した。
電気が来たときに店には冷蔵庫、外には自販機を置いた。
嬉しそうだった。

「電気さえ来れば、もっと商品を置けるんだ」
ずっと、そう言っていたから。
一緒になって悔しがった。店の棚からパンとコーヒーを買った。
「また来るよ」
それしか言えなかった。

feature

南三陸町防災センター。
今も多くのひとがここを訪れる。
花や供養の品、メッセージが所狭しと並べられる。
鉄骨だけになったスカスカの建物に、ギッシリと思いが詰まっている。

町はここをこの災害の遺構として残すことを提案するが、
遺族の心情も勘案し、取り壊しとなるそうだ。
先のことを考えるには、あまりに時間が少ない。
時間しか、傷ついたひとたちの心を癒すことができないのかもしれない。

the foundation

この日は仙台市の荒浜へ。
これは別に砂の山の上に家が建っていたのではない。
家の基礎から下が波に持って行かれたのだ。

こうして被災地域を行き来すると、波の高さ、被災範囲を確認する癖がつく。
そして、どこまで逃げれば助かったのか、段々とわかるようになる。
写真の場所からだと、どこへ逃げるにも極めて厳しかっただろうと思われる。

基礎だけが残る現場を見て、確かにこれが残るうちは次に進めないなどと
考えてしまいがちになる。
でも、南三陸の被災女性の話を聞いたときに、僕はそんな考えを恥じた。

half a year

震災から半年が経って、ようやく気仙沼を訪れることができた。
金曜の夜に深夜バスで東京を発ち、土曜の早朝に仙台に到着する。
しばらくはJRと代行バスを乗り継ぎ被災地を訪れていたが、
南三陸町以北はそれが難しい。

南三陸町。
3月末から被災地に入り始めて、7月にようやくこの町を訪れることができた。
毎週とは言わないものの、ほぼ月に2〜3回の週末を被災地で過ごすようになってからは、
この町には毎回のように足を運んでいる。
これからもここの写真はよく出てくるだろう。
どんな風にこの町のひとが復興していくのか、恐らく何年も訪れるだろうと思う。

タクシーの運転手はそう言って帰って行った。

これが散々メディアが言う復興って奴か、と腹の底から怒りが込み上げた。

unknown disaster

3月11日の東日本大震災の影に隠れてしまったが、
翌12日未明に小さな村を襲った震度６強の地震。
被災当初はテレビも新聞も取材には来なかったという。

あまりに報道が少ないので自分で確かめに来たのだと話すと
現地NPOの代表はこれまでのことを明瞭に説明し始めた。

the end of corridor

Canon EOS-1D mark2 with EF35mm f2.0

壁と壁に挟まれたその窓は、陽の光を直接受けることはなかったけれども、
こうして廊下の灯りを消せば、即座にその日、その時間の光と
季節を映し出す、美しい窓だった。

職場の中でどこが一番好きだった？と聞かれたら、
僕はこの廊下の突き当たりだと答える。
そういう場所が僕をずっと支えていたんだよ。
ありがとう。

The window which was inserted between the wall and the wall did not catch the positive light directly.
If I turned off the light of the corridor in this way, It was the beautiful window which projected the light
in that time, that day and that season immediately.

If someone asks me "Where did you like the first in our office?" ,
I answer that it is the end of this corridor.
Such a place supported me all the time.
"Thank you." though I was not able to say so far.
